Free range chickens at Nether Farm

Here at Nether Farm we celebrate our lovely ladies and want to share with you why we wouldn’t be without them. We currently have 17 hens, a wonderful diverse mix of Orpington, Sussex, Malines, Pekin and Silkies who provide us with a variety of different coloured and sized eggs.

Friendly chickens…

Our free range chickens have had to be reined in however. At one time we allowed them to roam around the whole farm and say Good morning to the guests. Unfortunately they rather took advantage of everyone’s good nature. Kindly guests were feeding them on the verandas and so the little Madams started going inside to request a second course!

Whilst we received lots of lovely feedback from guests saying how nice it was to have them wandering around, we had to draw a line with the additional veranda cleaning.

Farm fresh free range eggs

That little hiccup aside, they still have a substantial amount of real estate, you can see their bright blue and red coop from the Roundhouses and you will certainly hear them calling for breakfast and when delivering our eggs.

Guests are provided with our farm fresh, free range eggs in the welcome pack and we sell them at £1.50 for half a dozen as you’ll be sure to want some more.

Thinking of keeping chickens?

Here’s a few of the wonderful reasons for keeping your own brood;

  • Fresh eggs every day that are great-tasting and nutritious.
  • Natural pest control as chickens eat insects and weeds in your yard.
  • Fertilizer for your garden from chicken manure and compost.
  • Entertainment value from chickens’ personality and antics.
  • Educational opportunities for children and adults to learn about animal care and nature.
  • Stress relief from watching and interacting with chickens.
  • Sustainability from reducing food waste and carbon footprint.
  • Low maintenance as chickens only need food, water, shelter, and protection.
